The Change of Issuing the Notice of Grant of Extension of Time
On 4 March 2025, the Department of Intellectual Property (“DIP”) of the Ministry of Commerce (“MOC”) issued an announcement to inform local trademark agents who represented the brand owners for international trademark registrations filed through the Madrid System regarding the change in issuing the Notice of Grant of Extension of Time.
What’s New & Updated
- Announcement: The DIP will automatically grant the extension time 60 days from the filing date of the request of extension of time. In short, the DIP will no longer issue a formal Notice of Grant of Extension of Time. This change applies only to international trademark registrations filed through the Madrid System, and it will be effective starting from 17 March 2025 onward.
- Change: Prior to this announcement, the former administrative procedure was that the next due date to respond to the DIP was 60 days from the issuance date of the Notice of Grant of Extension of Time.
- Protection: This change will simplify the process and reduce the workload of the DIP in issuing the Notice of Grant of Extension of Time, and the brand owners/applicants do no need to wait for the issuance of the Notice of Grant of Extension from the DIP.
- Date of announcement: 4 March 2025.
