On 28 August 2020, the Ministry of Commerce (“MoC”) and the Ministry of Information (“MoI”) had issued Joint Prakas No. 0256 on “Business Registration and Protection of Mark and Trade name relating to information and audio-visual Licencing”, which establishes a legal obligation for information and audio-visual operators to register their business, trademarks and trade names with the MoC on the top of existing obligations.

Notwithstanding the abovementioned Joint Prakas, on 18 May 2021, the MoI issued a new Announcement No. 1829 reminding the owners of radio stations, television stations, newspapers, magazines, websites, online media outlets, and companies that provide information and audio-visual services who have not yet complied with the earlier Joint Prakas to fulfill their obligation.

According to the new announcement, media operators that have not filed for registration are strictly required to register with the MoC by the end of this year.

Failure to comply so will result in a revocation of their business licenses by the MOI from 2022 onward.
