Labour Ministry Clarifies Work Pay on Sunday Public Holidays

On 4 May 2022, the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training issued an Instruction (Instruction No. 028/22) clarifying how employers should pay employees for work on public holidays which fall on a Sunday, bearing in mind that Sunday may not be a rest day for some enterprises and that many public holidays in 2022 fall on Sundays.

Reiterating the most recent amendment to the Labour Law, the Ministry explained that public holidays which fall on a Sunday shall no longer be substituted with a holiday on the next working day (c.f. Article 162 (New) Labour Law). However, in situations where employees work on a Sunday that is also a public holiday, such employees shall be paid at a rate that is 200% or two times the regular working salary for the employee.
